2. YOU RECHARGE YOUR BATTERIES (sometimes) BY UNPLUGGING
We all know how addicting social media is. You can often find me on my Facebook page The Prosperous Goddess or one of my 17 Facebook groups, or on Instagram.
[See below to connect with me on social media!]
Most of us enjoy entertainment with fun(ny) and stimulating movies and television. We had no live television at all for 12 years and I confess, it was just a few years ago when Starz made a TV show based on Outlander that I said to my hubby, “Dude, WE ARE GETTING TELEVISION AGAIN.”
So for the last few years, Mark and the boys and I have been allowing ourselves the luxury of lots of great shows like Parks and Recreation, The Office, Game of Thrones and you may know I am a big Trekkie (in the 1990s, I actually wrote some material for Star Trek: The Next Generation).
Unless you live a super screen-free unplugged life like Ron Swanson, you are probably like us and some amount of screen time is part of your life.
I don’t want you to feel guilty for enjoying some recreational TV or movies, playing online games or enjoying your social network time.
BUT / AND …
Remember the old saying, “Everything in moderation”?
The average American spends 23.6 hours a week online, according to a recent survey from USC Annenberg, up from 9.4 hours in 2000. A Nielsen Company audience report found in February 2018 that the average American is spending 10 hours and 39 minutes daily on some kind of screen.
Even without going into all the dangers of Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs), and the damage all this screen time can do to our eyes, from an esoteric and energetic as well as a physiological standpoint, it is simply awful for all of us to spend so much time:
c) not engaging with other human beings in person
d) not engaging in reading, writing, playing games, and solitude.
So here’s my mantra:
You NEED to have at least one day a week when you are unplugged (or mostly unplugged).
In the Goddard household, that day is Sunday. If you can’t take off a whole day from screens (yet), try just 1/2 a day. Baby steps add up. Make one day a week a minimal screen time day.
I also believe that you need to treat yourself to several days in a row, at least a few times a year, when you REALLY RECHARGE. (and get entirely out of the EMFs and off screens)
What will you do with your time off the devices?
You’ll rediscover your hobbies. You’ll make meaningful social connections.
Make that phone call. Send that letter or package (remember those? Actual goodies that come in the MAIL? What a great way to show you love someone.)
Maybe you’ll read or write or create art.
Maybe you’ll play cards or board games or toss a ball around.
Maybe you’ll dance or walk or stretch or ride your bike or swim.
Maybe you’ll go for an “Adventure Day” road trip and explore some wonderful things to do nearby.
Maybe you’ll go to museums or art galleries or open mics…
Maybe you’ll take more baths or long cups of tea.
Maybe you’ll just gaze out the window and smile.
“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” – C.S. Lewis
Recently when I unplugged at Yosemite National Park, I was thrilled to tune in ☺
(to Source, not to the radio station or Internet) and I received a new song which I’m proud to share with you now on my first music album, Songs of Light.
You can hear a sample of all the songs right here, including “Yosemite Song.”
If you love the excerpts, you can buy my album for only $13 (thank you!).
Nature time is such a fantastic way to unplug and recharge!
As is music.
I’d love to see you share in a comment below – What is your commitment to unplug and recharge? How much time daily, weekly, quarterly, will you devote to the art of BEing?
When you read the ideas in this piece, what lit you up and woke up your inner YES!?
Your comments are warmly welcome!
I’d love to hear how this resonated for you and any thoughts this inspires…. 🙂
