CAUSES OF THE MOTHER WOUND

By Sage Taylor Kingsley

In the first article in this series, we looked at deepening our understand of What Is the Mother Wound?

Here in the second article, let’s examine the many causes of mother wounds (motherwounds). Some of these may also apply to paternal (father wounds/fatherwounds) as well as maternal.

As you read this, notice if your body contracts or if you have any emotional reactions triggered. Even if you intellectually know “That was a long time ago” or “Not my story anymore,” you may still be affected unconsciously, energetically and at the soul level until you heal the wounds at the root causes.

Here are the most common causes of mother wounds. Most people have more than one, and in very dysfunctional families where there are multigenerational patterns of trauma, many of these factors often are operating simultaneously or serially, causing tremendous suffering to all involved.

How many of these causes of mother wounds can you recognize?

MOTHER WOUND CAUSES BEFORE AND DURING YOUR BIRTH

* ANCESTRAL
Ancestral patterns of trauma, fear, scarcity. These ancestral causes may be many generations back, and the traumas (some call them curses but I don’t believe in curses because that’s fear-based negative thinking) will continue through the generational lineage until they are healed at the root cause.

* PREGNANCY
Your mother had health problems, drug or alcohol use, unusual stress, injury or trauma while pregnant with you.

* BIRTH TRAUMA
Your birth was traumatic to you and/or your mother (cord was around your neck, you were extracted by forceps, Caesarean, or other invasive method, your mother or you almost died or were very weak). Or you were born premature and had to be kept in an incubator or on life support.

MOTHER WOUND CAUSES DURING YOUR CHILDHOOD AND TEEN YEARS

* LACK OF MOTHER’S MILK / TOUCH
You were never breastfed, not breastfed long enough, there were problems with the lactation, and/or you were not held (or fed) enough in infancy

*CHILDHOOD POVERTY OR TRAUMA
You experienced poverty or trauma, particularly during early childhood

* PHYSICALLY ABSENT MOTHER
* Your mother died or was physically absent (you were orphaned, adopted, fostered or physically separated from your mother in your formative years, especially before age 14)

* EMOTIONALLY ABSENT MOTHER
Your mother was physically present but almost always emotionally absent (due to addiction, mental illness, promiscuity or poor choices with intimate relationships, workaholism, etc.)

* MOTHER WAS A NARCISSIST
You had a narcissistic mother (she didn’t see you, value you, it was always about HER, you were her parent, she was or still is manipulative, controlling)

* OVERLY CRITICAL MOTHER
Your mother was highly judgmental mother (always criticized you, spoke to you with negativity, shame and blame, no matter what you did, it wasn’t good enough). “Children should be seen and not heard.” Rigid gender roles. “Girls / boys should always do X and never do Y.” Often this is associated with religious dogma and guilt.

* YOUR MOTHER NEGLECTED OR SQUELCHED YOU.
You were the black sheep. Never valued for who you really were, felt squelched, invisible, unheard. Your mother, and perhaps also father and/or grandparents, favored your sibling(s) over you. Your brilliance and beauty were never recognized. You weren’t celebrated.

* MOM WAS OVERLY STRESSED AND PULLED IN TOO MANY DIRECTIONS
Your mother’s attention was pulled in too many directions while you were a young child. Perhaps due to too many siblings, too close together, a lot of moving / job changes / losses / upheaval or other family stresses in the household (mother couldn’t pay enough attention to you to properly nurture and love you even though she may have wanted to)

* MOTHER TOLERATED ABUSE OF YOU
* Your mother, instead of standing up for you and being a safe haven, “looked the other way” re: sexual or physical abuse by father or other family member (she suspected or complicitly condoned the abuse even though she was not the direct abuser)

MOTHERHOOD WOUNDS

*** Kindly note that if you are male, you may have the male version of these, which would be better described as father(hood) wounds. ***

* NEVER HAD THE CHANCE TO BECOME A MOTHER
You wanted to become a mother but couldn’t (didn’t find the right partner, infertility, ran out of time on biological clock)

* LOST A CHILD
You lost a child (death, suicide, estrangement, mental illness, adoption, drug or alcohol addiction, miscarriage, stillbirth)

* FEEL LIKE YOU WEREN’T A VERY GOOD MOTHER
You had one or more children but feel like you were an inadequate mother and didn’t make them enough of a priority in your life, and now it feels too late. Or your child is not open to reconciliation.

Wow. Long list. Did you know the issue of mother wounds was THIS complex? Most people don’t. This is why I am on a personal mission to educate, inspire and heal as many people as possible. When you really think about it, most people you know probably have some forms of mother wound. Would you agree? Of course for some people, the mother wound may be mild, or it may be moderate or severe.

So many layers and levels and lifetimes to heal. The next article will be about ways to heal the mother wound (also works for father wound and sister wound)… Love and Blessings, Sage Taylor xo
